Specialties

Anxiety, Panic Attacks and Depression: I have grouped these potentially debilitating experiences into one group because often these affective experiences are also cognitive experiences.  We think of potential disasters or catastrophes and anxiety or panic worsenes.  We think critical thoughts about ourselves and depression worsens. Using CBT, I help the client bring gentle attention and mindfulness to his or her negative thought processes. I combine this orientation with an interpersonal and psychodynamic approach and have seen significant positive changes in the client’s well-being. Often these changes can be accomplished in a Brief Therapy  time horizon.

Multi-Generational Work:

Parents and their Adult Children: I work with issues that come up between parents and their adult children. Sometimes I see each member separately or together in various dyads depending upon what would be helpful.

Adult Children and Grandparents:As an outgrowth of the above work, I have developed a specialty in working with grandparents who participate in the care of their grandchildren and their relationship with their adult children surrounding this care. Often there are misunderstandings, conflicts, differing child rearing notions, availability issues, money issues, which have painful consequences for all participants. I might see every member of the family in a variety of configurations to ease and heal these rifts or difficulties.

Traumatic Loss: I also work with people who have suffered a traumatic loss. Occasionally this might be done collaboratively with a grief counselor the client might be seeing. Post-traumatic stress often accompanies these losses.

Bi-cultural Identity: I have a particular interest in working with clients who are bi-cultural, with complex identities arising from belonging to two different cultures, often two different countries.

Consulation: I have been a teacher and consultant to psychologists, social workers, and marriage and family therapits for over 30 years.  I have also led consultation groups privately, at the Psychotherapy Institute, at the Wright Institute and Russell House Psychotherapy Institute.
